Rex talks about his background |

"I grew up in Port Angeles, Washington, with two older brothers, sparking my intial interest in martial arts. Some of my early influences were "The Kato Show" aka "the Green Hornet", a the slew of martial arts movies he spawned. After high school, a hitch in the military included training in hand-to-hand combat, bot armed and unarmed. During this time, I came across a book called "The Wisdom of Kung Fu", which had brief descriptions of various martial arts and philosophy. I was intrigued by the section Tai Chi.
Upon leaving the service I entered college, earning degrees in marine sciences and oceanography, and taking a karate class for P.E. credit. Also during this time, I was introduced to the Society for Creative Anachronism sword fighting. After college, I eventually found myself working on a NOAA ship doing oceanographic research and survey work. I continued reading what i could find out about various philosophies (Zen, Confusianism, Taoism, etc.).
After several years at sea, I eventually found another job in 1991 which brought me to Port Townsend. Two months later I saw Michael's ad for classes in the paper and I knew it was good move. I have been studying with him ever since, except for brief periods for old injury rehabilitation.
In 1995 he left me speechless by certifying me to teach, causing me to study even harder. In 1998 I started teaching for Michael in Port Hadlock."
